If you Google "Italy in August," you're likely to find descriptions along the lines of "dry, sunny, and hot." Sounds like Southern Oregon, no? Although we may not be Italy, we at least have the weather in common! Even more, we have the wine in common. We let our Italian roots show their full, spirited colors in Bayer Family Estate's August Wine Club selection of Sangiovese, Barrel Select Zinfandel and Barrel Select Barbera.

2016 Sangiovese

If you have never heard of Sangiovese, chances are you've tasted it (if you're a red drinker, that is). The Sangiovese grape is used to make some of the world's most famous blends, including Chianti, Brunello and Super Tuscan. Crafted on its own, as is the case in our 2016 Sangiovese, the grape makes a gorgeous and easy-drinking wine. This vintage is light with balanced acidity and smooth tannins. Expect luscious cherry-vanilla flavors followed by touches of cracked pepper.

2015 Barrel Select Zinfandel

If you know our wines, then you know our Zinfandel is crafted from our Primitivo grapes. Although there have been contentious and long-running debates about the variety's geographical origins, there is little question that Primitivo's modern-day home is in southern Italy which is why this grape varietal is near and dear to our hearts and of course has a home in our vineyard. Maintaining the rich and full-bodied characteristics of our 2015 Zinfandel, our Barrel Select Zinfandel reflects the additional time aged in American Oak barrels with its improved structure and body.

2015 Barrel Select Barbera

As one of the most planted grapes in Italy’s Piedmont region, Barbera grows particularly well on our Western facing vineyard slope. We like to call it a “hot” site which lends itself very well to this Italian varietal. Our 2015 vintage, aged an additional six months in American Oak barrels, is the perfect combination of a New and Old World Barbera – boasting fruity flavors from the tannins and acidity and an herbaceous finish, a reflection of the mineral rich terroir our vines are grown in.
